Jeff,
I was not quite right. The recompiled application worked on the single
machine only.
To process on several machines I had to install LAM from the source.

Yes -- absolutely. LAM is only user-source-code compatible between
releases, not binary compatible. Hence, you'll need to recompile your
application against this new version of LAM/MPI.
