Yes - LAM was actually designed to be friendly to running on groups of
workstations. It helps if you have uniform accounts and file systems,
but those aren't absolutely necessary.

Of course, a group of workstations on a public network will not perform
as well as a tightly bound cluster with a high speed network. And
those aren't exactly the highest speed machines in the world. But if
you want to teach parallel computing or steal a couple of cycles, your
setup will work fine.
