Well, that was strange. I did a ./configure with no options, just to see if
it worked, and it did. Then I saw your post, so I did
./configure --enable-shared; make clean; make

I was about to tarball the output and send it to you when I noticed that it
had worked!

Odd. Anyway, problem solved. Thanks again.
