Yikes -- as the error message says, this should not happen.

Can you send the output of configure, your config.log, and the output of
laminfo? (please compress!)

Also, FYI: it's ok to use the rsh boot SSI even if you're running on a
single SMP -- it'll just fork/exec a lamd into the background (i.e., rsh
won't even be used).
