I had the same problem... you're using RH 9??
i can't see the package name because this hppened to me
at home ;-) but look for some rpm called *aio* on your
RH disk and install it!
Just don't ask me what is it for ;-)

Subject: LAM: Problem compiling
I am a new user of LAM-MPI and I am trying to compile my first programs.
When executing the command "mpicc"
with my source file I get the message:
/usr/bin/ld
cannot find -laio
I must need some library paths in my Linux installation. Any suggestions?
Jose Arreola.
