I appologize -- this slipped by me (way too much mail in my inbox!).
According to the MPI-1 standard, the status return object in the case of
non-blocking sends only has to indicate whether the request was cancelled
or not. All other fields are meaningless. Specifically, essentially the
same text appears in the description of MPI_WAIT and TEST in MPI-1:3.7.3.
Here's what it says for MPI_WAIT (p 41:36-39):
"The call returns, in status, information on the completed
operation. The content of the status object for a receive
operation can be accessed as described in section 3.2.5. The
status object for a send operation may be queried by a call to
MPI_TEST_CANCELLED (see Section 3.8)."
