I think that I may have solved my problem.
I checked out the bswap32 error on the net and I found
the following link
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2002-10/msg01145.html
this claims that there is an error in
/usr/include/bits/byteswap.h
I changed this file according to the suggestion in the
link and LAM now compiles.
I will now have to check to see that it works.
