Clarification: the portland compilers do not work when using shared
libraries.
This is a known issue, and unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about
it -- it's a limitation of the GNU libtool package (which LAM uses to
build shared libraries). See section 4.4.4 in the Installation guide
(release notes / Linux) -- it specifically mentions this problem with the
Portland compilers and shared libraries.
