XMPI requires the Motif libraries be installed. The error you saw was
configure informing you that the Motif libraries could not be installed.
On Linux machines, this is not all that uncommon, especially with recent
versions of Linux. Your options are:
* Buy an X11 server with a commercial version of Motif
* Install OpenMotif, a "free" implementation with some redistribution
restrictions
* Install Lesstif, a free implementation from www.lesstif.org
